Paula Buttery: Abstract

This talk will provide a general introduction to the methods and challenges of text mining: a process by which information is discovered from text. A typical text mining pipeline will be presented and the roles of Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing and Information Extraction will be discussed. Currently text mining techniques are being widely employed within the BioMedical domain: for instance, to discover patterns in the interaction of proteins from academic writing. An example of text mining from this domain will be presented as well as an example of how text mining may be used to improve our understanding of the cognition of language.
