Frederic Stahl (DFKI: German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence): Abstract

Plastic waste in large quantities polluting earth continues to threaten the aquatic ecosystem and mankind. Most plastic waste in the oceans originates from land and finds its way to the sea through rivers, coastal and estuarine systems. The talk presents our work on developing a system of Convolutional Neural Network to automatically identify polluted areas, and quasi-quantify floating and washed ashore plastic debris. The method was developed using high spatial resolution imagery captured from drone surveys in Cambodia with the aim to improve waste and plastic management.
