Dr. Xan Morice-Atkinson (University of Portsmouth): Abstract

You’ve finally got your data for your project, but there’s too much of it and you’re going to need some help. If only there was a platform where you could call on enthusiastic volunteers to assist.

Zooniverse is a platform that enables research that normally would not be possible or practical. Computers are great at many things, but the human ability for pattern recognition is still superior when there are no pre-existing datasets. With the help of Zooniverse and the volunteers on the platform, researchers can analyse their data in a quick and accurate way by taking advantage of ‘crowd-sourced research’.

In this talk, I will explain what Zooniverse is, why it’s great, and how it helps researchers develop datasets and models that previously did not (and arguably could not otherwise) exist.
