Professor Koushik Maharatna (University of Southampton): Abstract

Treating neural disorders by nerve stimulation is gaining momentum. But its population-wide outreach is hindered by inter-person variability in treatment outcomes. The main challenge is person-centric selection of appropriate stimulation parameters which at this moment is more of a trial-and-error method. Understanding of the electrical interactions between information carrying axons in a nerve bundle is the key in determining such parameters. In this talk, I’ll discuss about our newly formulated analytical model that shows such axon-axon coupling is highly dynamic and can lead to several scenarios under which neural codes could be changed in a very selective way. This leads to a ruleset based on which an AI model could be created aiding determination of appropriate nerve stimulation parameters in person-centric manner.
