Dr. Anelia Kurteva (Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Birmingham, UK)

Dr. Anelia Kurteva is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science (Data Management for AI) at the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, The UK. Previously, she was a senior postdoc at Department of Informatics, King’s College London and a postdoc at TU Delft, The Netherlands. Anelia completed her PhD at the Semantic Technology Institute (STI) Innsbruck, Department of Computer Science, University of Innsbruck, Austria. She received an MSc in Advanced Computer Science as well as BSc in Computer Science and Visual Computing from Cardiff University, The UK. Anelia's research explores how ontologies and knowledge graphs can be utilised to support data interoperability, privacy-preservation and automated legal compliance verification as a backbone for trustworthy and responsible AI. Her doctoral research on making sense of consent with knowledge graphs and collaboration on automating GDPR compliance verification based on semantically modelled informed consent has been recognised by the OECD Policy Division and the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs as a significant contribution to the field of Accountable AI. In 2023, Anelia joined the European Data Protection Board’s pool of experts in new technologies, privacy and data protection and in 2024 she was awarded a postdoc fellowship in AI Safety and Security by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Anelia has been involved in multiple international and national projects including smashHit H2020, CampaNeo FFG, RePlanIT NWO, CIRPASS-2, FAIR-PV, MLCommons that help build more trusted and secure data ecosystems in the smart cities, insurance and circular economy domains.
